(ENG) Felix de Rooy will receive the Golden Calf for Film Culture this year. The Golden Calf for Film Culture is awarded to individuals or organizations that have made an exceptional contribution to Dutch film culture. The award will be presented during the EY Golden Calves Gala of the Netherlands Film Festival (NFF) at the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht on Friday, 27 September. Felix de Rooy, featured in the short documentary *Nomad in No Man's Land* by Hester Jonkhout, which will premiere at the upcoming NFF, will receive the 39th Golden Calf for Film Culture upon the recommendation of the Supervisory Board and the Artistic and General Directors of the Netherlands Film Festival.
Felix de Rooy is being honoured with the Golden Calf for Film Culture for his significant contribution to Dutch art and culture. From the recommendation report: "Felix de Rooy has built an impressive career as a multidisciplinary artist. As a trailblazer, he has played a crucial role in bringing different perspectives to the forefront. His art highlights subjects that remain relevant today, such as the colonial past, the viewpoints of various cultures, and the significance of queer identities in art. With his versatility as an actor, filmmaker, artist, theatre maker, curator, collector, commentator, and social critic, he inspires generations both in the Netherlands and beyond."

**Biography**
Felix de Rooy (Curaçao, 1952) is a versatile artist. He is active as an actor, visual artist, theatre maker, and collector. He studied at the Free Academy in The Hague during the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1970s and 1980s, his work drew attention to the position of black creators and acting roles, as seen in his debut *Desiree* (1984) and *Almacita di Desolato* (1986). As an artist, he also designed (film) posters. De Rooy did the art direction for Spike Lee's short film *Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads* (1983). His film *Ava & Gabriel – A Love Story* (1990) marked his breakthrough as a filmmaker in the Netherlands and was awarded the Golden Calf Special Jury Prize. As a social critic, he created the documentary series *Legacy of Slavery* (2003), accompanied by an exhibition about the colonial past of the Netherlands. As an actor, he appeared in *Boy Ecury* (2003) by Frans Weisz and in the Golden Calf-winning film *Buladó* (2020) by Eché Janga. In 2000, he was appointed Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau, and in 2017, he received the Black Achievement Award for lifetime achievement. In 2023, the Stedelijk Museum presented the exhibition *Apocalypse* to celebrate De Rooy's 50-year artistic career, and the Eye Filmmuseum hosted a retrospective exhibition of all his films. This autumn, Felix de Rooy's visual art will be featured in an exhibition in Berlin.

Het Gouden Kalf voor de Filmcultuur wordt uitgereikt aan personen of instanties die zich op uitzonderlijke wijze verdienstelijk hebben gemaakt voor de Nederlandse Filmcultuur. De uitreiking van deze prijs vindt plaats tijdens het EY Gouden Kalveren Gala van het Nederlands Film Festival (NFF) in de Stadsschouwburg Utrecht op vrijdag 27 september. Felix de Rooy, geportretteerd in de korte documentaire Nomade in niemandsland van Hester Jonkhout die op het komende NFF in première gaat, ontvangt het 39e Gouden Kalf voor de Filmcultuur op voordracht van de Raad van Toezicht, de Artistiek en Zakelijk Directeur van het Nederlands Film Festival.
Felix de Rooy wordt onderscheiden met het Gouden Kalf voor de Filmcultuur vanwege zijn grote betekenis voor de Nederlandse kunst en cultuur. Uit het aanbevelingsrapport: "Felix de Rooy heeft met zijn multidisciplinaire kunstenaarschap een indrukwekkende loopbaan opgebouwd. Als voorvechter heeft hij onder meer het verschil gemaakt om andere perspectieven over het voetlicht te brengen. In zijn kunst benadrukt hij de onderwerpen die ook nu nog steeds actueel zijn; het koloniale verleden, de zienswijze van verschillende culturen en de betekenis van queeridentiteiten in de kunst. Hij inspireert met zijn veelzijdigheid als acteur, filmmaker, kunstenaar, theatermaker, curator, verzamelaar, beschouwer en maatschappijcriticus generaties in Nederland en ver daarbuiten."
De reactie van Felix de Rooy op de toekenning van het Gouden Kalf: "Ik ben erg erkentelijk dat de mensen mij deze eer toekennen. Het Gouden Kalf voor de Filmcultuur zal nu samen met mijn vorige Kalf, mijn leven mooier maken."

Zijn film Ava & Gabriel - un historia de amor (1990) betekende zijn doorbraak als filmmaker in Nederland. De film kreeg het Gouden Kalf Speciale Juryprijs toegekend. Als maatschappijcriticus maakte hij de documentaireserie Erfenis van slavernij (2003) met een bijbehorende tentoonstelling over het koloniale verleden van Nederland. Als acteur verscheen hij in Boy Ecury (2003) van Frans Weisz en de met het Gouden Kalf bekroonde film Buladó (2020) van Eché Janga. In 2000 werd hij benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau en in 2017 ontving hij de oeuvreprijs Black Achievement Award. Het Stedelijk Museum presenteerde in 2023 de tentoonstelling Apocalypse over het 50-jarig kunstenaarschap van De Rooy en Filmmuseum Eye presenteerde in hetzelfde jaar een overzichtstentoonstelling van al zijn films.
